The Ostrog Monastery, a miracle of nature and human work, carved into an almost horizontal rock, today is a pearl of Montenegrin spirituality that is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims – from all over the world and of all religions – during one year. The Ostrog Monastery, with the relics of St. Basil of Ostrog, the Wonderworker, was built in 1650 and consists of the Lower Monastery, the Upper Monastery and the Church of the Holy Martyr Stanka, a shepherd from the village of Podvrače, Danilovgrad, who was beheaded and killed by the Ottomans because he refused to accept Islam. The Upper Monastery is located at 900m above sea level. It consists of two churches dedicated to the Holy Cross and the Virgin Mary (the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and it houses the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog, known for their healing power. The lower monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
All Montenegrin spirituality, faith and cultural wealth seem to have found refuge in one place in the heights of the Ostro rocks. A destination that will take your breath away will fill your soul with a fresh and sublime feeling of love for God.
